In the ‘Astronomy Picture of the Day‘ on this Tuesday (12), NASA highlighted not only the beauty of the northern lights but also that of the central strip of the Milky Way.

The image is the result of a composition of 20 photos taken by Giulio Cobianchi over the Lofoten Islands in Norway in 2022 and showcases the celestial beauty of both events.

On the left, you can see the central strip of the Milky Way, a spectacle of stars and nebulae that majestically embraces the southern sky. Below, the planet Mars and the extensive Andromeda Galaxy add a touch of color and grandeur to the image.

On the right, the northern lights emerge, encircling part of the northern sky in green tones. This luminous natural phenomenon occurs in the polar regions of Earth and is caused by the interaction between charged particles from the solar wind and the gases of Earth’s atmosphere.
